The city of St Albans celebrates Alban Weekend from Saturday 23rd to Sunday 24th June 2018. The Alban Pilgrimage procession on Saturday 23rd June 2018, features spectacular giant puppets and remembers the story of Saint Alban, the first recorded Christian martyr in Britain, who was beheaded by the Romans. On Sunday 24th June 2018 you can enjoy the Summer street party which includes live music, 70 food and drink stalls and entertainment for all ages.
Alban Pilgrimage 2018
The annual Alban Pilgrimage takes place in St Albans in honour of Saint Alban who died on 22nd June over 1700 years ago. On Saturday 23rd June 2018, 11am, the procession on St Peter’s Street in St Albans brings the story of Alban to life with 12ft tall puppets of chariots, soldiers, lions, executioners and there’s even an eyeball! From St Peter’s Street follow the procession to the West End of St Albans Cathedral to see the puppets re-enact Alban’s execution.
On Sunday 24th June 2018 you can enjoy the Alban Street Festival, 12noon to 6pm. St Peter’s Street in St Albans will be closed to traffic and the streets of St Albans come to life with something for everyone including music stages, a range of creative activities, over 70 traders selling food, drink and crafts, street performances and more!
Drop into St Albans Museum + Gallery on Market Place in St Albans, 12noon-4.30pm, to try out the art of screen printing in a special one-day workshop with professional printer and artist Laura Felicity. Learn alongside an expert and create a bespoke souvenir to take home. £2 per child. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
See, learn and experience what a soldier’s life was like, what was in a soldier’s kitchen, the weapons that soldiers carried during the First World War and the story behind the poppy. There will be a Soldier’s Display Show at 2pm and Children’s Marching Drill Workshop at 12.30pm and 3.30pm, as well as poppy making and WW1 In The Sky workshops.
Look out for the bike ramp with live bike stunt shows at 1pm, 3pm and 4.30pm and the opportunity to have a go in a 10 minute Bike Ramp Workshop (8yrs old +) 12-1pm, 2-3pm, 4-4.30pm and 5.30-6pm.
Come and see what is growing at the Incredible Edible Civic Centre Food Garden, by the Alban Arena, managed by FoodSmiles St Albans. There will be seed planting and a bird-feeder making workshop 12noon-6pm.
Learn about the story of Saint Alban and make your own Alban puppet with St Albans Cathedral. Free for all ages 12-6pm
Poppycock will be bringing back the pineapples with their Summer themed Tiki Bar!
Come and play on the handmade games created by Peter Templeman from Oaklands College.
