Fun Family Days Out in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire in May 2019

Whether the sunshine is here to stay or not, May brings beautiful bluebells, bank holidays, fêtes, fairs, festivals and lots of fun family days out in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. It’s another busy month and I really hope it’s a sunny one too!

Here’s my selection of fun family days out in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire in May.

NHM at Tring – British Dinosaurs From Fossils To Feathers

Akeman Street, Tring, Hertfordshire, HP23 6AP

The Natural History Museum at Tring is currently home to a new, free exhibition: British Dinosaurs from Fossils to Feathers, a small exhibition, featuring 15 carefully selected specimens, including a complete Hypsilophodon, which is about the size of a small dog. This exhibition obviously can’t compare to the spectacular Dinosaurs Gallery at the Natural History Museum in London, instead it highlights some interesting fossils discovered in the United Kingdom. British Dinosaurs from Fossils to Feathers, is open to visit until 11th October 2019. Take a look at my recent visit for an idea of what to expect.

ZSL Whipsnade – Great Brick Safari

Whipsnade Road, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, LU6 2LF

Until Sunday 2nd June 2019, visit ZSL Whipsnade to embark on the Great Brick Safari. If you’re crazy about animals and wild about LEGO, then you’ll love this super-sized day out made for the whole family. Discover unbelievable LEGO brick beasts and mammals, from a jumbo elephant that weighs a tonne of bricks to a giant gorilla that’s built for life in the jungle! Cliveden – Bluebell Walk

Cliveden Road, Taplow, Maidenhead, SL1 8NS

Visit Cliveden until Saturday 12th May 2019, 10am-5pm, to see a blanket of bluebells on a self-led trail around the estate. Nestled inside the woods at Cliveden, bluebells brighten up the historic forest. The best displays will be highlighted on a trail map, so make sure you pick up a trail sheet from the information centre. Visit the website for more information.

Wimpole Estate – Lambing

Celebrate the arrival of Spring by watching the frolics of newborn lambs and learn about the life of sheep until Sunday 12th May 2019, at Home Farm on the Wimpole Estate. Visit the website for more information.

Dunstable Downs – Butterfly Trail

Whipsnade Road, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, LU6 2GY

Visit Dunstable Downs from Wednesday 1st to Friday 31st May 2019, 10am-5pm. Pick up a map at reception inside the Chiltern Gateway Centre and set off on a gentle stroll across the meadows to find the clay butterflies hidden there. The trail is £1.50 per child. On Wednesday 1st May 2019,  10am-11am, join BEEE Creative at the Stevenage Museum for a FREE jam-packed dance workshop, to get the whole family moving and having fun together. Hemel Old Town Hall – One Giant Leek For Mankind

On Saturday 4th May 2019, join comedian, author, illustrator and all-round idiot Olaf Falafel as he introduces his latest book ‘It’s One Giant Leek For Mankind’. As well as this slightly educational tale of the 1969 moon landings, there will be really bad jokes, cool drawing tutorials, farting moon baboons and lots of general mucking around. This new adaptation of Clive King’s novel Stig of the Dup has been developed by members of the Chickenshed Young Company. Brambleton Model Railway Club Open Day

On Saturday 11th May 2019, from 2-5.30pm, Brambleton Model Railway Club Open Day is being held at their site accessed by woodland paths next to the Highfield Oval in Harpenden.  The short trek up winding and leafy paths is rewarded by the sight of this charming model railway club. St Albans Organ Theatre Sunday Opening

On Sunday 12th May 2019, 2.00pm to 4.30pm, do something different and visit St Albans Organ Theatre. The theatre is only open on the second Sunday of each month and during the Sunday opening there will be a live and continuous musical performance of the various instruments given with an informal, descriptive commentary. Not Just A Family Fun Dog Walk for Cure Cancer at UCL
