May Half Term Places To Go In Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire

Sunshine, showers, hail, thunder… whatever the weather decides to throw at us this half term, we’re ready for all meteorological mixes. Indoors or outdoors, there are plenty of places to go in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire this May Half Term. It’s your last chance to see the Great Brick Safari at ZSL Whipsnade, you can celebrate 20 years of The Gruffalo, watch thrilling displays in the skies at the Duxford Air Festival or even see Gladiators battle!

Dinosaur fans are in for a treat, as you can enjoy a visit to the exhibition at NHM Tring: British Dinosaurs from Fossils to Feathers, there’s also Dino Adventure Day at Knebworth and Dino Week at Mead Open Farm! Here’s my selection of May Half Term places to go in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, I hope it helps give you some ideas for the holidays.

St Albans Museum + Gallery – Barbara Hepworth: artist in society 1948-53

Visit the St Albans Museum + Gallery from Saturday 23rd March to Sunday 8th September 2019, to see the latest major exhibition, Barbara Hepworth: artist in society 1948-53. Explore a short but significant period in the life of one of Britain’s most celebrated artists. This poignant exhibition introduces sculptures, drawings and archival material, reuniting works that have not been seen together since they were first created. Entrance is free. NHM at Tring – British Dinosaurs From Fossils To Feathers

Akeman Street, Tring, Hertfordshire, HP23 6AP

The Natural History Museum at Tring is currently home to a new, free exhibition: British Dinosaurs from Fossils to Feathers, a small exhibition, featuring 15 carefully selected specimens, including a complete Hypsilophodon, which is about the size of a small dog. This exhibition obviously can’t compare to the spectacular Dinosaurs Gallery at the Natural History Museum in London, instead it highlights some interesting fossils discovered in the United Kingdom. British Dinosaurs from Fossils to Feathers, is open to visit until 11th October 2019. Take a look at my recent visit for an idea of what to expect.

ZSL Whipsnade – Great Brick Safari

Whipsnade Road, Dunstable, Bedfordshire, LU6 2LF

Until Sunday 2nd June 2019, visit ZSL Whipsnade to embark on the Great Brick Safari. If you’re crazy about animals and wild about LEGO, then you’ll love this super-sized day out made for the whole family. Discover unbelievable LEGO brick beasts and mammals, from a jumbo elephant that weighs a tonne of bricks to a giant gorilla that’s built for life in the jungle! Dunstable Downs – Fairy Trail

Come to the Chilterns Gateway Centre at Dunstable Downs from Saturday 25th May to Sunday 2nd June 2019, anytime from 10am to 4pm for the Dunstable Downs Fairy Trail. Collect your trail sheet from reception in the visitor centre, £1.50 per child, then go in search of the fairy doors hidden amongst the trees on the estate. Remember to wear clothing suitable for the weather and wellies or walking boots – it might be muddy! Visit the website for more information.

Marleys Stay & Play at The Marlowes Hemel Hempstead

The Marlowes Shopping Centre, Hemel Hempstead, HP1 1DX

Visit the Marlowes Shopping Centre in Hemel Hempstead from Saturday 25th May to Sunday 2nd June 2019 and celebrate the launch of the new Marley’s Stay & Play in the heart of the centre court at Marlowes Shopping Centre. The Gruffalo Pop Up Shop in Covent Garden

From Saturday 25th May to Saturday 1st June 2019, visit a special pop-up shop dedicated to all things Gruffalo, to mark 20 years of one of literature’s best-loved children’s characters. Spread over two magical floors, the specially designed pop-up shop will give Gruffalo fans a unique immersive experience. In addition to a dedicated retail space there will be arts and crafts, storytelling sessions and special appearances from the Gruffalo across the day. Downstairs will be home to a special cinema offering screenings of The Gruffalo and other classic specials based on the Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler books. On Saturday 25th May 2019, visit Hemel Old Town Hall to see Bird’s Nest Billy. Billy is a little boy with a big brother called Bo. They both have big, bird’s nest hair. One day, when his big brother is at school and Billy has no-one to play with, a magical bird chirps out of his big, curly, bird’s nest hair. The bird grants him three wishes. The show brings his fantastical adventures to life with Fidget Theatre’s trademark wit and warmth, blending imaginative storytelling, puppetry and playful audience interaction. Train and Track Play

Come along to Train and Track Play on Saturday 25th May 2019, session times are 10-11am, 11.15am-12.15pm, 1-2pm, 2.15-3.15pm and 3.30-4.30pm. Come and play with the Train and Track Play large track, trains and cars. Train and Track Play is an organised session for children to integrate and socialise with other children through playing with toy trains and cars. Knebworth House Dino Adventure Day

Ventura Wildlife Rangers will be offering hands on experiences with the live reptilian relatives of the dinosaurs including snakes, lizards and tortoises. Northaw Races Camel Racing

Green Dragon Eco Farm Working With Wool Day

Visit Green Dragon Eco Farm on Monday 27th May 2019, 11am-4pm, and enjoy demonstrations and exhibitions at sheep shearing time! The rare breed sheep no longer need their fleecy coat as the weather gets warmer and as well as shearing demos from the Sheep Show, there will be local textile artists displaying their work, demonstrations of felting, knitting and spinning. Hitchin Lavender

Hitchin Lavender re-opens for the 2019 season on Monday 27th May 2019, (weather dependent so check Hitchin Lavender social media updates – flowering is mid June to mid August). For a small charge you can collect lavender, if it’s available to harvest (adults £6, under 14’s £3, under 5’s free) and enjoy a walk up and down the lavender fields. There’s also a lovely tea room. Welwyn Roman Baths – Woolly Sheep

On Monday 27th May 2019, 2pm to 4pm, come along to Welwyn Roman Baths and have fun getting creative making woolly sheep! No booking required but come at the start of the session as places are limited and it is first come, first served. Suitable for children aged 4 years old and above. This activity session is £3.50 per child and children must be accompanied by an adult at all times (free admission for one adult with each child taking part in a paid activity, otherwise admission is £3.50 per adult). Stockwood Discovery Centre – Be Not Afeard

From Wednesday 29th to Friday 31st May 2019, visit Stockwood Discovery Centre and see Be Not Afeard. The isle is full of noises, sounds, and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not. How do we help our children grow the skills to be confidently curious about their world at a time when anxiety and overwhelm affect so many? We explore this challenge with a sensory musical version of The Tempest suitable for 0-7s and fully inclusive for those with special and/or complex needs. Expect a twangling, painty, touchy, feely, smelly and magical adventure delivered with warmth. Signed and Relaxed. The production will be semi-immersive and provide a range of sensory experiences that children and their grown-ups can interact with to help co-create the story. Burston Garden Centre – Create Your Own Mini Garden

On Wednesday 29th May 2019, between 11am and 3pm, book your place to enjoy some half-term fun at Burston Garden Centre. Back by popular demand, visit Burstons and make your own mini indoor garden. Children will be able to fill a tray with compost, plant three indoor plants and then finish their mini garden off with some decorative stones. Additional mini garden decorations will be available to be purchased separately too! £4 per child and booking online in advance is advisable, as these events often sell-out. Creative Mindful Workshop with Live & Learn and Les Petit Felix

On Wednesday 29th May 2019, 10am-12noon come to The Mill House in Hertford for an inspiring Creative Mindful Workshop for children aged 6-12 years old. Children will be provided with eco-friendly materials to make their own teepee out of eco-sourced wood, 100% cotton fabric, colourful wool felt props and paint, stencils etc. They will make their own toy which will become part of a story and the children will be free to create their own story book, story board or character description. On Wednesday 29th May 2019, visit Stockwood Discovery Centre to see Young Herbert’s Horrors. Young Herbert is a little horror. Living on a boat should be the ideal life for a wannabe pirate, but the boat’s grounded until Herbert can learn to tidy his cabin, eat his greens and be more polite. Featuring swashbuckling verse, jaunty music, gallows humour and the obligatory parrot, Young Herbert’s Horrors is a brand new show for children.
