Mish Mash Music sessions are nurturing, interactive, music classes for babies and toddlers, where all the music is played live. Every week there are new sensory experiences, different sounds, a variety of instruments to explore and original songs that allow your child to develop listening and language skills as well as creativity, confidence and a love of music.
Mish Mash Music has been the highlight of the week for many families in St Albans for 14 years! Filled with unique musical ingredients, Mish Mash Music is a class where you can breathe and enjoy time with your child as Ruth takes you on a tried and tested musical journey that babies and young children truly enjoy.
The Mish Mash Story
Friendly and full of fun, Mish Mash Music is run by Ruth, an experienced teacher and musician who has been running music classes and workshops in the local community and schools since 2003. Ruth can sing, march, wiggle, jump and dance whilst playing instruments, to the delight and amazement of babies and young children (and adults too). Most of the music is written and played by Ruth and her brilliant songs will become part of your family. You will never be able to walk in wellies without a rendition of Welly Boot Wash, eat a pot of jelly without breaking into Do My Ears Look Funny, or change a nappy without singing Smelly Welly Poo Poo.
What can parents and children expect from Mish Mash Music?
Mish Mash Music is filled with live music. From the moment you enter the class there are instruments on the floor, accessible for babies and young children to explore. Classes are split into two age groups: the baby class is gentle, filled with sensory experiences and wonderful bonding activities that you can take home and enjoy together; the toddler class is more active to allow children to explore music while moving about and developing gross motor skills.
In both classes you can expect brilliant, original songs with strong rhythms that resonate with babies and young children. Your baby will have opportunities to hear and also to play a wide variety of instruments that are accessible from a very young age. There are colourful scarves, playful puppets, bells, chimes, pots, guiros, shakers and drums… there’s even a parachute dotted with sparkling stars.
Mish Mash Music is relaxed, fun and inclusive and Ruth’s energy and experience allows her to tailor every session to the group. Throughout the sessions Ruth plays a range of instruments from guitar to steel pans, chimes to her amazing drums. All the music is played live so your child can see music being played and be part of making the music too. Classes always end with the chance to chat to other parents and carers. Over the years many friendships have been forged at Mish Mash Music and the location of the classes (next to Verulamium Park) mean you can carry on the conversation in the park, or in the nearby café or waffle house.
How Does Mish Mash Music Benefit Young Children?
Rhythm is important to the development of a baby’s listening and language skills. Strong rhythm, speech patterns, rhymes and funky beats weave their way through every Mish Mash Music class. The fun-filled sessions also help to build children’s social skills and confidence, as well as their imagination and creativity. There are songs that particularly develop body awareness, songs that help to develop eye muscles by tracking moving objects and action songs that develop hand-eye coordination.
Every term you take home a CD of special Mish Mash Music songs, all performed by Ruth, so you can carry on the fun at home. Many Mish Mash families have found the CDs are invaluable on long car journeys or cold, rainy days.
What Age Range Do Classes Cater For?
