What’s On In Hertfordshire in August 2019

The school holidays will soon be here and there are plenty of fantastic summer days out in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and beyond, to keep the whole family entertained. Take a look at my guide to what’s on in Hertfordshire in August 2019 and neighbouring counties of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

Here you’ll find a range of days out, events and activities throughout August 2019, from the Summer of Sport at Waddesdon Manor to the fantastic Flamstead Scarecrow Festival and much more. There’s also my guide to What’s On In July 2019, so you’ve got the whole of the summer holidays covered!

St Albans Museum + Gallery – Barbara Hepworth: artist in society 1948-53

Visit the St Albans Museum + Gallery from Saturday 23rd March to Sunday 8th September 2019, to see the latest major exhibition, Barbara Hepworth: artist in society 1948-53. Explore a short but significant period in the life of one of Britain’s most celebrated artists. This poignant exhibition introduces sculptures, drawings and archival material, reuniting works that have not been seen together since they were first created. Entrance is free. Cammas Hall Fruit Farm

Cammas Hall Farm, Hatfield Broad Oak, Hertfordshire, CM22 7JT

Cammas Hall Fruit Farm is open for the 2019 season. Pick your own fruits and vegetables as they come into season and then visit the tea barn, farm shop, maize maze, nature trail or the children’s play area. Visit the website for more information, including the latest pick your own updates.

Hitchin Lavender

Cadwell Farm, Arlesy Road, Ickleford, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, SG5 3UA

Hitchin Lavender is now open for the 2019 season 9.30am-5pm, (weather dependent so check Hitchin Lavender social media updates – flowering usually lasts until mid August). For a small charge you can pick lavender and/or sunflowers, if it’s available to harvest (fees apply) and enjoy a walk up and down the fields. There’s also a lovely tea room. Top tip – wear trousers as the fields are often buzzing with bees. Visit the website for more information.

Stockwood Discovery Centre – Interactive Science Exhibition

London Road, Luton, Bedfordshire, LU1 4LX

Come along to Stockwood Discovery Centre from Monday 1st July to Sunday 8th September 2019, for the Interactive Science exhibition! Fully interactive, innovative, fun, educational and entertaining, the Interactive Science exhibition suits adults, students, children and families of any age. Produced by World Touring Exhibitions in collaboration with a team of scientists, physicists, geologists and astronomers, Interactive Science combines both knowledge and fun challenges with interactive machines to experience and play with science. Recommended for children 7 years old and above, the exhibits are unsuitable for young children and children under 5 years old are not permitted to use the machines. Burston Garden Centre – Summer Garden and Sandpit

North Orbital Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire, AL2 2DS

From Saturday 13th July to Sunday 15th September 2019, visit Burston Garden Centre’s summer garden and sandpit. Enjoy some playtime in the gated garden area, play with outdoor toys such as giant Jenga and giant snakes and ladders, or doodle on the super-sized outdoor blackboard. Willows Farm Summer Spectacular

Coursers Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire, AL4 0PF

From Saturday 20th July to Sunday 1st September 2019, Willows Farm Summer Spectacular will be in full swing. Go along and explore the A-maize-ing Maze, have an adventure in the Peter Rabbit Adventure Playground and see one of the live shows with Peter Rabbit and his friends. You can visit the farm animals, watch the goat races, or take a ride on Tristan the Runaway Tractor. Jordans Mill – Let’s Go Wild

Visit Jordans Mill from Saturday 20th July to Sunday 1st September 2019, and pick up your Let’s Go Wild Activity Passport, which helps little ones go on the hunt for wildlife in the Mill Meadow and Woodland. Complete the pages of the passport to earn a special badge. A Let’s Go Wild Passport costs £1.50 per child, or FREE with the purchase of every children’s meal in the Riverside Café. Audley End Miniature Railway Summer Fairy and Elf Festival

Visit Audley End Miniature Railway from Saturday 20th July to Sunday 8th September 2019, for the Summer Festival! Enjoy a magical day and take one of the trains into the woods, enjoy the fairy and elf walk, as well as crafts, story telling, face painting. Booking is recommended but not necessary. RSPB The Lodge – Wild Challenge

The Lodge Nature Reserve, Potten Road, Sandy, Bedfordshire, SG19 2DL

From Saturday 20th July to Sunday 1st September 2019, 10am-4pm, visit RSPB The Lodge and take part in the self-guided trail where you can discover den building, log clambering, natural obstacle paths and mounds and climb the raised viewing platform, along with collecting nature themed brass rubbings. Mead Open Farm – Summer of Fun

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

This summer, spend the day at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo discovering familiar and not-so-familiar animals, find out about their lives and the conservation work that goes on to protect the world’s wildlife for generations to come. Visit the new aquarium, the UK’s first Aquarium dedicated to conserving the world’s most endangered freshwater fish. See the elephant house, the penguins, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, hippos and much more… all in the stunning setting of the Chilterns. There are daily animal shows and you can ride the Jumbo Express steam engine through the zoo. If all that wasn’t enough, then you can also play in the Hullabazoo Adventure Play and Indoor Play Centre. Take a look at my review of the new aquarium.

RSPB Rye Meads – Nature Pirates

Rye Road, Stansted Abbotts, Hertfordshire, SG12 8JS

From Friday 26th July to Sunday 1st September 2019, 10am-4pm, visit RSPB Rye Meads and take part in the self-guided trail where you can make your own treasure chest, explore the reserve, collect ‘treasures’, walk the plank, see the mysterious ‘blue flash’, build a crow’s nest and even enter the photo competition by taking a photo in the Sea Raven. A trail sheet is £2 per child. Parking is £4 for non-RSPB members (there is no cash machine and there are no card facilities on site, so make sure you take cash and small change for parking, drinks and ice creams). Waddesdon Manor – Summer of Sport

Visit Waddesdon Manor from Wednesday 31st July to Sunday 4th August 2019 and have fun with the kids on one of the Summer of Sport trails around the Waddesdon grounds. Enjoy Oarsome Orienteering and navigate your way around the gardens, try the Waddesdon Workout and test yourself with a series of workout challenges, or bring your scooter and become part of the peleton on the Tour de Waddesdon. £2 per child, per trail, in addition to normal grounds admission charges. NHM Tring | Dinosaur Diets

Visit the Natural History Museum at Tring on Thursday 1st August 2019 and get up close to dinosaur teeth and create a tooth pendant in the Dinosaur Diets workshop. Little Artist – Summer Art Session – Rainforest Wildlife

The Mill House, Dicker Mill, Marshgate Drive, Hertford, Hertfordshire, SG13 7JY

On Thursday 1st August 2019, 2-4pm, book your child’s place at The Mill House in Hertford for the Little Artist Summer Art Session which has the theme ‘Rainforest Wildlife’. The suggested age for this session is 3-8 years old. Create your own exploration kit with binoculars and compass, then take a walk to the park to see what you can spot! You can also go wild with feathers and make a twirling parrot to hang on a big tree. Finally help to paint and decorate giant hanging leaves, which will form part of the rainforest canopy in a large group installation. Ashridge Adventures

Go along to Ashridge Estate and for some Ashridge Adventures! The education team will be running outdoor activity sessions every Tuesday and Thursday during the Summer holidays (10.30am-12noon or 1.30-3.00pm). The second session is on Thursday 1st August 2019. From pond-dipping to mini beast hunting and den building there’s always something fun happening at Ashridge… wear clothes that you don’t mind getting muddy. Gordon Craig Theatre – Mr Stink

See Mr Stink from Thursday 1st to Saturday 3rd August 2019 for a brilliantly staged version of this warm-hearted and funny story. The very kind, but lonely, 12 year old Chloe invites the homeless Mr Stink and his dog to leave behind the wooden bench where they have taken up residence and secretly move into her family’s shed. Matters become more complicated when Chloe’s mother tries to take credit for Chloe’s generosity. And precisely who is Mr Stink anyway? You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You might want to hold your nose. Chiltern Open Air Museum – Wellington’s Army

Visit the Chiltern Open Air Museum on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August 2019, for Wellington’s Army! Be transported back in time to the Napoleonic era. Meet Napoleonic soldiers and find out about the life of a Rifleman in Wellington’s army during the Peninsular war. Visit the living history encampment and learn how the soldiers’ families lived. Watch a thrilling display of military skill as the soldiers skirmish (will include gunfire). All activities are subject to change and weather so check the details before you travel. Blakesley & District Agricultural Show

Blakesley Heath Farm, Maidford, Towcester, Northamptonshire, NN12 8HH

On Saturday 3rd August 2019, come along to the Blakesley Show & Gymkhana. This rural and traditional show holds around 70 equestrian events including qualifiers for Olympia and the Royal International Horse Show, as well as events for younger riders. The Main Ring entertainment will be provided by Waldberg Shire Horses who will be telling the story of Heavy Horses through the ages. Rock At The Castle

This year’s Rock At The Castle is one Sunday 4th August 2019, 12.30pm-7pm. Enjoy the annual, free music festival, within the spectacular grounds of Hertford Castle. Live music will be performed across three music stages featuring acoustic, folk, indie, rock and pop music. There will also be a bouncy castle, street food and bars. Adventure Tuition – Creative Writing Summer Camp

Radlett Centre – Aliens Love Underpants

Gymboree Theatre Arts Workshops – Zog

Gymboree Theatre Arts Workshops are designed specifically for children aged 3 to 6 years old. Each four-day workshop is based on a theme and helps develop confidence, self-expression, concentration and interaction with others using Drama, Music, Art and Dancing. Plus you get to enjoy watching your child in a short performance at the end of the week! In both Key Stages 1 and 2 of the UK Schools’ National Curriculum music, dance and drama are seen as a way to develop control, coordination, poise, expression of feelings, expression of moods, expression on ideas and response to music. Gymboree’s Theatre Arts programme develops all of these important skills and promotes independence and school readiness. Hertford will be joining in with the National Play Day, on Wednesday 7th August 2019, 11am to 4pm, by offering child friendly events in the town centre. Come and enjoy some child friendly activities, games, promotions and events throughout the day, most of which are free of charge. Wardown House – Felt Mice Workshop

On Wednesday 7th August 2019, book your place on the Felt Mouse Workshop at Wardown House. Children will be able to work with Nic and Alison from Felt and Dandy to learn basic needle felting whilst making a beautiful little felted mouse pencil topper. This workshop suitable for children aged 8 years old+ and is ideal for children with some experience of using needles, scissors etc under expert supervision. They will learn how to make, and take home that day, a beautiful little mouse pencil topper. The workshop will cover various basic needle felting techniques. All materials will be provided, and the children will leave the workshop with a finished mouse! Please note that adults are welcome to stay with children but will not be able to make their own mouse. On Thursday 8th August 2019, 2-4pm, book your child’s place at The Mill House in Hertford for the Little Artist Summer Art Session which has the theme ‘Creepy Crawly Bugs’. The suggested age for this session is 3-8 years old. Create your own bug crown, then build and decorate your own observational bug house to take home. Finally, get messy with paint and help to decorate lots of giant bugs and flowers, to form part of a large group installation.
